The new urban planning tools for the city of Assisi are characterized by a specific attention to the issues of environmental sustainability. In Umbria, development is inseparable from sustainability; sustainability is the common thread, a set of priorities of strategic value to be implemented in the territorial context, understood not as a static container, but as a dimension, both spatial-physical and socio-economic, in transformation. The new Master Plan has therefore set itself as its primary objective the improvement of environmental quality, aimed at a better use of resources, at the same time for the community, a rational economic and social development, both in the agricultural and in the urban environment, accompanied by actions to mend and harmonize previous planning systems and previous regulations, in order to manage a considerable amount of superordinate constraints as well as, of course, to accommodate an overall strategic redefinition focused on new purposes and new operating methodologies. The new P.R.G. is one of the pilot projects for the preparation of an urban planning tool for cities having the entire territory subject to the Unesco Heritage constraint. The methodology proposed for the drafting of the new P.R.G. of the Municipality of Assisi, which Territory is, in its entirety, considered a Unesco Site - World Heritage Site, wants to constitute a shared operational reference, able to guide and verify planning choices and, at the same time, manage the protection of landscapes of Assisi understood, according to the European Landscape Convention, as "an expression of the diversity of their common cultural and natural heritage and the foundation of their identity".
